Spiritual Intelligence? Is that really a thing? Absolutely!
Intellectually, you may assess a situation, opportunity, action or structure based on fact or experience that’s supported by your IQ, or Intelligence Quotient.
Emotionally, your judgment regarding the same situation, opportunity or action might have a strong, “Yah, but …” based on your EQ, or your Emotional Quotient.
But at the very heart of every decision, every action, every consideration …every dream of a purposeful life, is a simple intuitive truth that we choose to embrace or ignore. It’s often referred to as the ‘soul’s intelligence’, or Spiritual Intelligence – SQ.
SQ, for example, is that voice that speaks to you from the heart saying an action is wrong, yet your IQ, or EQ may inject it’s opinion as a means to assure you its an action you can either get away with, or that harm to others is little, if any. An EQ driven by fear may prevent you from even trying to achieve your heart’s desire, but your SQ will find you returning to such a longing again and again because of the meaning or value you hold for such a life.
Spiritual Intelligence (SQ) is present during any thought or action that represents meaning and value for you. It helps us choose one action over another, one journey over another, or one job over another. It helps us navigate our relationships with others, and solve problems for which we’ve also attached deeply felt meaning and value.
To ignore our Spiritual Intelligence can result in painful internal conflicts so harmful to our very being that IQ and EQ may be of little consequence.
Understanding and developing your SQ benefits you in the following ways:
- Ability to face and use both pain and suffering
- Being inspired by vision & values
- Reluctance to cause unnecessary harm
- Easily see connections
- Curiosity and innately asking “why” and “what if”
- Creativity: Thinking outside the box and coloring outside the lines
The journey to achieving our best selves, or the ability to lead others effectively is determined, in part, by our ability to assess, develop and embrace our soul’s SQ.
